From the number of phone calls my office has gotten recently, it appears that many inmates in the federal system are under the impression that an early deportation program has been implemented. This is not the case. However, I believe that it is entirely reasonable to assume and hope that an early deportation program will be instituted given the dire economic circumstances we face. But, as an inmate in one of the federal institutions pointed out, people who have a vested interest in keeping jails full will put a lot of pressure on congressmen not to implement this program. These people are personnel whose livelihood depends on a healthy wealthy penal system. Nevertheless, it is hoped that the economic circumstances are stark enough that congress will see the wisdom and the savings in reducing the prison population.
I hope this clears things up.
